Having lived and worked in the state of Vermont, including
Burlington, for several years, I was excited with Director Nicole
Lewis asked me to help create the sense of life in rural Vermont. To
help establish the setting, I recorded cars and trucks passing by on
a county highway in the mountains of New Hampshire, along with some
of the sounds of the town of Whitefield, which closely resembled some
of the small Vermont towns I had worked in. These sounds helped
establish the world outside of Marty's studio during scene shifts.
My memories of the many singer / songwriters busking on the streets of
Burlington, as well as the many local music festivals throughout
Vermont, helped inform my thoughts on incidental music for
pre-show, intermission, and curtain call. I thus looked for
acoustic covers of popular music, and original acoustic music in
that style to help create the musical soundscape of rural
Vermont.
The resulting sound design helped blend the tranquility and
folk-artistry of rural Vermont, and helped situate Marty's creative
drama class as part of a small-town artistic ecosystem.
