At the core of The Tempest is a tale of family and
reconciliation. In the space of a few short hours, Prospero's last
spell will bring about the marriage of his daughter, the restoration
of his dukedom, the freedom of Ariel, and put Caliban on the road to
grace. Everything will be perfect and stay that way forever, but
first and foremost the characters need to learn to set aside their
baser natures and forgive one another.
In staging The Tempest in the round, Will chose to
highlight Prospero's role as playwright, in the traditional sense,
of the play's events. As lighting designer, I tried to not only
create the atmosphere of the island after the storm, the magic of
the spirits, and the setting sun, but also to enable the audience to
be able to watch themselves watching the play.
